Description

This project is designed to increase the number of urban riparian restoration sites on Yellowhawk Creek as model projects for property owners to improve water quality through removal of non-native plants and planting of native plants. Fish will benefit from decreased water temperature, decreased sediment and pollution entering the stream, and increased flow through water conservation.
This project will build on Phase I of the Yellowhawk Streamkeepers, completed under other funding, by adding one Walla Walla School District property (Murr Field) for restoration by the end of June 2009. The scope of the project will also expand to provide additional resources to property owners interested in enlisting in a Streamkeepers network that will involve businesses associated with urban development, such as developers, builders, and irrigation and landscape companies. Through the Walla Walla Backyard Stream Team coordinated by Kooskooskie Commons, a subcommittee of the citizens Water and Waste Water Committee for the City of Walla Walla, the restoration and preservation work will be coordinated with City of Walla Walla and the Walla Walla County Community Development staff. As the example projects are completed and the Yellowhawk Streamkeepers Network develops confidence, community outreach and appropriate publicity such as property tours, newspaper articles and other media will be developed and distributed.
